Server Bandwidth Usage

Post by Realadmin »

Hi guys, very quick question, my zombie server is outputing about 20Gb of bandwidth per day, which is causing me and my host major grief, not 2 fussed about my hosts grief, but now they are swicthing me over to a metered pack which is like 50p a gig, at my current usage which is 700Gb+ a month, i'll paying a minor fortune to keep my zombie server up..£350+

Is this amount of bandwidth normal?

im running a 32/33 man server on 66 tick

thanx guys

20 gigs? do you run sv_downloadurl off this server also? please ask for a connection log/bandwidth stats from the host, and maybe an explanation of where exactly this bandwidth is going.

Main point : is your server full 24/7? then yes you can use that even wih no downloads from server, otherwise well... stuff happens. Check wit your host, their logs are your best bet.

******* weird math below dont look if you dont want a headache********

IF On 32 player server you have your server full 24 hours a day and 32 people were downloading 24 hours using the trickle method you would get 20-21 gigs or so of bandwidth usage(factoring in average 8KB of download per person.)(on the trickle download most people can get highs of 8 to 9 KB(from my own experience and from the steampowered.com forums), which leads to about 700MB of bandwidth a day per person(rounded up). then you have the normal server usage of about 3 KB per person(they CAN use upto 7 but thats something you can check out n your server, i.e. whats the average use per person just use netgraph 3 and see where you are), which is about 300 megs per person(rounded up) leading to about 9 gigs of bandwidth usage for the server if 32 players were on 24 hours.....There are ups and downs in these figures, like when people connect and disconnect etc but we are working in a perfect world with some very stable numbers for the purpose of this weird math exercise....

(most figured rounded up) If you are running sv_downloadurl off of the same account then things get a bit screwy and the connection log/Bandwidth stats from host will come in handy.

to be honest i have tried both methods, download from us or host, either way its consuming same amount of data, dont sound right, but thats what is happening ..

i would say we get about 20 hours of 30+ usage, then like 3-7 its quiet then picks up again back to 32'ish.

I get loads of error messages like this decal aint here, that aint there etc etc

this is the IP to my server if u want to see them for yourself: 85.159.248.135:27115

Would be really gratefull if anyone can get to the bottom of this issue

Btw: im in the UK, which hosts do you guys use for your zombie servers?

I am assuming you guys are all talking about the actually server bandwidth

also does this include sv_download?

So which one are you guys talking about when saying numbers....

server only
server and sv_download together
sv_download only
